Week in Review (Nov. 7 - Nov. 13)

Lady Hawk Volleyball faced off with Morgan St. on Nov. 8 and played in their last match of the season against George Washington on Nov. 11. UMES basketball opened their season with a pair of exhibition games on Nov. 10 in the Hytche Center. The Lady Hawks battled CIAA member Bowie State while the Fighting Hawks hosted Davis & Elkins. Women's Bowling was also in action as they traveled to Dover, Del. to compete in MEAC North Competition on Nov. 12-13.

Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif.) totaled a team high 13 kills and Melanie Durimel (Neuilly sur Marne, France) added 12 kills as UMES volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-30, 30-28, 31-33, 11-30) non-conference decision to Morgan State Nov. 8 at Hill Field House.

Kim Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel) finished with seven kills each while Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led the team in digs with 18. Esther Johnson had 20 kills to lead Morgan State while Ashley Preston finished with a match high 34 digs.

The Lady Bears finished the match with 67 kills on 175 attempts for a .251 hitting percentage, while holding the maroon and gray to .185 percent (51 kills on 151 attempts). Morgan State, who also capitalized on UMES errors (23 for the game), used those opportunities to pull out a tough 33-31 win in game four which could have gone either way.

Lady Hawk volleyball concluded their season on Nov. 11 with a 3-1 loss to the George Washington (GW) Colonials at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials won by the scores of 30-15, 30-13, 22-30, and 30-14.

UMES (5-28) was led by Jeffery's 10 kills and S. Braxton's 16 digs. Freshmen Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Maja Baltic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) added seven kills each.

GW junior Juliene McLaughlin led all players with 16 kills and hit .353 with nine digs while Lindsey Vernand added 11 kills.

After the Colonials breezed to victories in the first two games, it was the Hawks who came out strong in game three and built a 15-10 lead. GW closed to within 16-14 before another run by the Hawks gave the maroon and gray a 21-15 lead on a service ace by Rozner.

Following a GW timeout, UMES got kills from four different players to take a commanding 29-19 lead and won the game on a kill by Baltic.

Game four was all the Colonials as GW raced out to a 11-3 lead and took the game to seal the victory.

The match was the last for seniors Jeffery and Nicole Wilson (Bronx, N.Y.). The rest of the Hawks will continue their season next fall.

The Lady Hawks basketball squad defeated the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs in convincing fashion, 82-49, in their season opening exhibition game on Nov. 10.

UMES had a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double-digits as the Lady Hawks held Bowie State to 37% field goal shooting. Sophomore Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) led the way for the UMES, scoring 17 points on 7-9 shooting from the field. Veltkamp also added eight rebounds and four blocks.

Senior Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) had 11 points, while Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) and DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, N.J.) added 13 each. Hailey also added five steals on the defensive end.

The Lady Bulldogs, who only dressed six players, were led by 13 points each from Genet Moore and Chanel Turner.

The Lady Hawks, who led by 26 points at the half, never looked back as they shot 55% from the field. UMES also fared well defensively, forcing 30 turnovers while stealing the ball 18 times.

The maroon and gray open their regular season on the road this week, traveling to Farmville, Va. to participate in Longwood's Lancer Invite on Nov. 18-19. They return home on Nov. 29 to face national powerhouse Temple in a 7 p.m. decision.

The Fighting Hawks basketball squad also picked up a win on Nov. 10. UMES defeated the Davis & Elkins Senators, 82-68, in their season opening exhibition game at the Hytche Center.

The Fighting Hawks were led by three players in double-figures. Senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) had a game high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds. Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) added 16 points and six assists, while Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in with 13 points. Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md.) and Art Valentine (New York, N.Y.) finished with eight points each.

Jelani Jackson led the Senators with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Brett Rector finished with 16 points, while Bobby Alexander finished with 12.

UMES, who went on a 15-4 run to open the game, held Davis & Elkins to 40% shooting from the field. The maroon and gray forced 16 turnovers and took 15 more attempts from the charity stripe than the visiting Senators.

The Fighting Hawks open their season on the road on Nov. 14 when they travel to Iowa to face the host Hawkeyes in the opening round of the Guardian's Classic. UMES plays their home opener on Friday, Nov. 25, facing off against Nicholls State in a 4 p.m. contest.

The UMES athletic teams have been giving back to the community in a big way. In the last month, three Hawk teams have visited local elementary schools.

To kick off the month's community service outreach, the Women's Basketball team visited Princess Anne Elementary in Somerset County. The athletes had a question and answer session with 5th grade students and autographed posters and schedule cards for faculty, students and staff.

The Men's Basketball team recently met with Wicomico High School's Transition One program in Salisbury, Maryland. The squad ate lunch with the students during their assigned lunch periods and had a question and answer session with selected students.

The Lady Hawk volleyball team visited Princess Anne Elementary earlier this semester and volunteered at the Eastern Shore "Blow the Whistle On Asthma" Walk this past Saturday, November 12.

The 5K walk was held at Salisbury City Park and Zoo in Salisbury, Md. Proceeds from this free, family-friendly fun walk went to the American Lung Association of Maryland's fight against asthma and other lung diseases, through education, advocacy and research in Maryland.

The Asthma Walk is one of many community service initiatives planned by Hawk Athletics. Earlier this fall, the Women's Bowling team collected much needed supplies for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Lady Hawks, in conjunction with the Southern University Women's Bowling team, shipped the items to the American Red Cross.

The teams plan on giving back to the community throughout the semester. For the most up-to-date information on UMES Athletics, please visit www.umeshawks.com.
