Week in Review (Nov. 14 - Nov. 20)

UMES basketball kicked off the 2005-06 campaign as both the Lady and Fighting Hawks opened their season on the road. Women's Basketball began their season with trip to the four-team Lancer Invitational on Nov. 18-19 while Men's Basketball played in the Iowa Regional of the Guardian's Classic on Nov. 14-15. The Fighting Hawks finished up the week with trips to UMBC and St. John's (NY) on Nov. 18-19. Women's Bowling was also in action as they hosted the Eastern Shore Classic that same weekend.

Jeff Horner and Greg Brunner each scored 16 points to lead No. 20 Iowa to an 86-41 victory over the UMES Fighting Hawks in the first round of the Guardians Classic on Monday, Nov. 14.

Iowa advanced to play Tuesday, Nov. 15 against Colgate, which beat Utah Valley State 55-42.

Adam Haluska added 12 points for the Hawkeyes, who never trailed and shot 51 percent from the floor in coasting to their 28th straight season-opening victory. They have won 42 home openers in a row.

Maryland-Eastern Shore, which started three freshmen and has five others on its roster, made mistakes typical of a young, inexperienced team. The Hawks committed 25 turnovers in their opener and struggled in transition to keep pace with Iowa's relentless, up-tempo style.

The Hawks were led by junior college transfer Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md.), who had 14 points. Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.), one of two seniors, added 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks shot only 27 percent.

After a slow start, Iowa found its rhythm and pulled away in the first half. The Hawkeyes went on a 26-8 run behind 15 combined points from Horner and Brunner.

They kept up the pressure on defense, forcing 14 first-half turnovers to build a 44-20 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Iowa continued to pull away, outmuscling the Hawks down low and pushing the ball up court at every opportunity to build a 30-point lead just 5 minutes into the second half.

Iowa outrebounded the Hawks 47-36, nearly doubled their point production in the paint and scored 16 fast-break points. Iowa also had 17 steals and eight blocked shots.

Parham scored 18 of his 21 points after halftime and Maryland-Eastern Shore rallied from 14 down to beat Utah Valley State 75-72 in overtime on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in a Guardians Classic consolation game.

Maryland-Eastern Shore sent the game into overtime at 67-all on McMillion's three-point play with 20.7 seconds left, then held on after scoring the first six points of the extra session.

It was a sharp turnaround for the Hawks, who start three freshmen and lost to No. 20 Iowa 86-41 on Monday night.

Utah Valley State (0-2) never trailed until overtime. The Wolverines, who led 27-13 in the first half, were up 67-64 after Sylvester Allison's two free throws with 33.2 seconds remaining.

McMillion, who finished with 15 points, then drove the ball down the lane and hit a leaning shot as he was fouled by Pierre Thomas. He made the free throw to produce the first tie since it was 2-2 and Allison missed a 3-point shot just before the buzzer.

Matt Peterson led Utah Valley State with 21 points, Allison scored 12 and Ben Devoe had 10. Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) scored 16 for Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Jackson's steal and layup a minute into overtime gave the Hawks their first lead, 69-67. Parham then went across the lane for a scoop shot and Jackson scored on a putback, making it 73-67.

Trailing 73-71, Utah Valley State had a chance to tie it when Allison went to the line with 39.7 seconds left. But he made only one of two shots, McMillion grabbed the rebound and sank two free throws with 28.3 seconds to play.

With the clock winding down, Utah Valley State could manage nothing better than a long 3-point attempt by Allison that bounced away and was rebounded by Maryland-Eastern Shore's Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md).

Parham recorded his second double-double in just three games but the 20 point 15 rebound performance wasn't enough as Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) exacted revenge from last season when the Hawks topped UMBC. UMES dropped a 10 point contest to the Retrievers on Nov. 18, 75-65.

McMillion added 16 points, Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md.) had 10 and Brooks added nine as all three local players gave their best effort to help the Hawks but the 22 UMBC free throws did in UMES.

The following story is the official release from www.umbcretrievers.com and appears compliments of them.

John Zito posted career highs with 23 points and 14 rebounds as host UMBC (1-0) opened the season with a 75-65 win over Maryland Eastern Shore. It is the seventh straight year that UMBC has opened with a win. The Retrievers have no time to rest as they host LaSalle on Sunday and play at Towson on Tuesday.

Zito had secured his third career double-double by halftime with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The visiting Hawks held a slim lead for most of the first 20 minutes, but the Retrievers closed the half on a 8-0 run to lead 32-28 at intermission.

UMES took its final lead at 42-41 on an Antonio McMillion three-pointer with 13:41 to play. But then UMBC went on a decisive 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 55-42 lead with 9:34 to play. The Retrievers hit four three-point goals in the run, including a pair by sophomore Brian Hodges. Zito capped the run with a three-pointer from the right wing.

The Hawks got within 61-54 on a Jesse Brooks three-point goal with 4:57 to play and had two possessions to trim the lead again. But a missed field goal and missed front end hurt the Hawks and freshman Jay Greene hit a pair of free throws and sophomore Mike Housman hit a baseline jumper with 3:23 remaining to give UMBC a comfortable eleven-point cushion.

Zito hit eight of 16 from the floor, including both three point goals and was five-of-nine from the free throw line. Hodges also managed his first career double-double with 13 points and a career high 10 rebounds, despite a subpar shooting night of 3-of-16. Greene came off the bench and tallied 16 points, including 10-of-10 from the charity stripe, all in the second half.

UMBC hit 18 of 21 free throws in the second half and were 22 of 27 (81.5%) for the game, while UMES managed just four of 12 from the stripe. The Retrievers committed only 11 turnovers, while the Hawks suffered 11 of their 19 in the final 20 minutes.

Parham led the Hawks with 20 points and 15 rebounds. McMillion added 16 points for the visitors.

Men's Basketball team concluded its busy opening week with a loss at St. John's (N.Y.) on Saturday, Nov. 19. The Fighting Hawks, who opened the season playing four games in six days, dropped their contest to the Red Storm, 77-40.

Tyson had 14 points off the bench to lead UMES and was the only Hawk to score in double figures. Qavotstaraj Waddell (Norfolk, Va.) added six rebounds while Jackson chipped in with four assists.

Dexter Gray had 16 points for St. John's while Darryl Hill and Cedric Jackson added 14 and 12, respectively. Lamont Hamilton added 13 rebounds as the Red Storm held a 57-33 rebounding advantage over UMES.

The Hawks (1-3) held a 7-6 lead before St. John's scored 19 straight points with 6:12 left in the first half. The Red Storm (1-0) held a 31-12 halftime lead and outscored the maroon and gray 46-28 in the second half. UMES will play their next contest at home when they face off against Nicholls State on Friday, Nov. 25. Tip off at the Hytche Center is slated for 4 p.m.

The Lady Hawks had a solid outing in their season opener at the Lancer Tournament on Nov. 18-19, but it wasn't enough to top the twin power of Ashley and Amber Mason, twin sisters who combined for 46 points, 26 and 20 respectively. UMES fell to host Longwood in the first round of the Lancer Invite, 72-58.

UMES got 10 points from freshman DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, N.J.) in her first collegiate game while Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) added eight points in the loss.

The story of the game was fouls as the two teams combined for 51 personal fouls, 31 in the first half. Longwood took advantage of the foul trouble on the starting backcourt of the Hawks as well as sinking 24 of 30 free throws. The Lady Hawks made 21 of their own but missed 14 and shot just 28 percent from the field to the Lancer's 47 percent.

The following story appears from www.longwoodlancers.com and appears compliments of them.

Longwood University earned a 72-58 women's basketball decision over visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first round of the Lancer Invitational hosted at Willett Hall Friday night. The Lancers are now 1-0 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 0-1. Longwood was led by senior forwards Ashley Mason and Amber Mason. Ashley Mason finished with a double-double of 26 points and 15 rebounds - both game-highs, while Amber Mason added a career-high 20 points, one block and seven steals. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 19 when they face Florida International in the championship contest of the Lancer Invitational at 4:00 p.m.

The Hawks held an early 8-5 advantage at the 16:42 mark, but a 7-3 run by the Lancers gave Longwood a 15-8 lead; a lead it would never relinquish. Longwood pushed its lead to 10 points, 29-19 at the 5:58 mark when Ashley Mason sank two free throws. The Hawks sliced the Lancers lead to 29-22 on a layup by Rachael Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn.), but Longwood scored the final 13 out of 16 points of the first half to hold a 17-point advantage, 42-25, at halftime. Ashley Mason scored eight of LU's final points, while freshman Claire Blevins and Amber Mason both scored two points a piece.

Longwood continued to pull away early in the second stanza as Blevins made a layup at the 16:10 mark to give Longwood a 48-29 cushion. The Lancers would gain their largest lead of the game at the 4:35 mark when Amber Mason sank two free throws to give Longwood a a 20-point lead at 69-49. Maryland-Eastern Shore closed out the game on a 9-3 run to give Longwood a final victory score of 72-58.

Besides Ashley and Amber Mason, the Lancers were led by Blevins and junior guard Abigail Freese Ohio scored eight and six points, respectively. Blevins also added six rebounds, while Freese dished out four assists and made one steal. LU shot 46.8% (22-47) from the field, including 25.0% (4-16) on three-pointers, and 80.0% (24-30) from the charity stripe. Longwood also held the 43-34 edge in total rebounds.

The Hawks were led by Veltkamp who had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Hailey added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Maryland-Eastern Shore shot 27.9% (17-61) from the field, including 15.0% (3-20) on three-pointers, and was 60.0% (21-35) at the free throw line.

Kennedy scored a career-high 24 points to lead the UMES Lady Hawks to a 77-67 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in the consolation game of the Lancer Invitational on Nov. 18. The Lady Hawks bounced back from a season-opening loss Friday night to record their first win of the season less than 24 hours later.

Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) added 19 points and eight rebounds for UMES (1-1), who built an 11-point halftime lead despite early foul trouble from MEAC preseason First-Team selection Veltkamp. The Lady Hawks held off a late run by Gardner-Webb (0-2), who got back within five points at 71-66, by ending the game on a 6-1 run. Veltkamp started the run with a clutch lay in and finished with 14 points.

Veltkamp was named to the 2005 Lancer Invitational All-Tournament Team on Sat., Nov. 19. Veltkamp, who averaged 15.5 points and six rebounds in two games, was selected by participating coaches to be on the all-tournament squad.

Veltkamp posted a double-double in the loss to host Longwood on Nov. 18 as she finished with a team high 17 points and 10 rebounds. The pre-season All-MEAC First-Team candidate also tallied three steals and two blocks in the contest versus the Lancers, and shot 70% from the field in the UMES victory over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 19.

Joining Veltkamp on the all-star unit is Sequenta Blackman (Gardner-Webb), Kevia Small (Longwood), Ashley Mason (Longwood), Lasma Jekabsone (Florida International), and tourney MVP Eva Makela (Florida International).

The Lady Hawks return to action on Tues., Nov. 29, when the team takes on #19 Temple in a 7 p.m. home contest.

The Women's Bowling Team hosted their first major NCAA Bowling Tournament on Nov. 18-19 at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del. The Eastern Shore Hawk Classic was an event that hosted 19 Division I teams and was considered by many one of the best tournaments that these schools had ever been a part of.

"It was a great tournament this weekend really well run and well thought out. You did a lot of great things. We'll be back next year if you have it again," said Vanderbilt University's Head Coach John Williamson in an e-mail to UMES Head Coach Sharon Brummell.

"Things really went great, the bowling alley was first class and did a wonderful job, we had volunteers and parents and supporters come out and help make it a first class show," said Brummell. "On the bowling side of things I would have liked to have seen some more `Ws' but fifth in total pinfall in a pretty good showing," she added. The Lady Hawks finished the weekend 5-5, improving their record to 27-11 on the young season.

The Lady Hawks picked up wins on Nov. 19 over Prairie View A &M (877-758) and Norfolk State University (896-633). They suffered three losses that day to North Carolina A & T (NCAT) (889-929), Southern University (813-862) and Vanderbilt University (878-894).

"The shot [oil pattern on the lanes] was difficult," said Brummell. "We didn't see as high of totals as we usually do." Nonetheless the Hawks a high individual game came from co-captain Sandra Maresca who tallied a 220 against Norfolk State. Fellow co-captain MaryEtta Lewis rolled a 202 against Prairie View in game one. Other than a 202 from Maresca against NCAT no Hawks individually rolled higher than 200. Megan Raymond tallied a 199 in her game vs. Vanderbilt.

On day two the format changed to Baker games. The Hawks picked up two wins off the bat against South Carolina State University (592-425) and Cheyney (454-357). They then fell to Texas Southern (540-567) but rebounded to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (613-519).

They closed out the second day on Sunday with a 551-591 loss to Southern. Fairleigh Dickinson University won the event by pinfall with a total of 8918. Second place was New Jersey City University with an 8259, followed by Vanderbilt in third with 8253. UMES was in fifth with 8036.

The Hawks highest individual finisher was Lewis in 15th place with an average of 192 while Maresca was 20th averaging a 183. Jessica Worsley was their third highest finisher with an average of 165 in 39th place. The Hawks are back in action this holiday weekend, Nov. 25-27, at the National Team Match Games in St. Louis, Missouri.

Upcoming Week (Nov. 21 - Nov. 27)
