Week in Review (Nov. 28 - Dec. 4)

Men's and Women's Basketball were the only Hawk teams in action this past week. The Lady Hawks battled #18 Temple in a home contest on Nov. 30 while the Fighting Hawks faced off with non-conference foes Marshall and Morehead State in road contests. UMES dropped their decision to the Thundering Herd on Dec. 1 but defeated the Eagles on Dec. 3 to pick up their second win of the season.

Sophomore Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) scored a game high 17 points while DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, N.J.) added 14, but it was not enough as #18/18 Temple edged the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks on Nov. 30 at the Hytche Center, 60-53.

Candice Dupree led Temple with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Lady Comfort finished with 14 points and eight boards. Kamesha Hairston chipped in with 11 points, while Jennifer Owens had a game high six assists for the Owls.

"We would have loved to had a win," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "However, we were in a position to win late in the game against a top 20 team. If we can play like that every night, play with that enthusiasm and determination, then we do very well this season," he added.

UMES held Temple to 39% shooting from the field in the second half and out rebounded the Owls 19-7 on the offensive end. The Lady Hawks also forced 18 turnovers, and held Temple to 1-17 shooting from beyond the arc. The key was the Hawks incredible zone.

"Every team has played a zone against us in the last five games," said Temple Head Coach and women's basketball legend Dawn Staley. "And no one has played us that well with a zone. It gives us as a coaching staff something to watch and work on. Coach Batchelor executed his game plan and did it well. He by far prepared the best to play us," she added.

Temple (6-0) took a 13-9 lead to start the game, but UMES (1-2) responded with a 7-0 run behind baskets by Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md.) and Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.). A lay-up by Veltkamp gave the Lady Hawks their first lead, 16-13, at 11:49 in the first half.

The Owls next answered with a run of their own. A trey by Owens at the 11 minute mark capped the 9-0 burst by Temple. Rachael Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn.) ended the UMES drought with a lay-up at 7:35, but the Owls still took the lead at the half, a six-point advantage, as the teams went into the locker rooms.

A jumper by Hairston gave Temple a 13-point advantage, their largest lead of the night, at 17:15. Key offensive rebounds by Veltkamp and Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) help cut the Owl lead to five with just under four minutes left in the game, but Temple went 9 for10 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes to hold on for the seven point victory.

"I have no problem playing anybody anywhere," said Staley in response to bringing her top 25 team to Princess Anne. "We were that team six years ago and we got that chance. Plus, we got something good out of this and we got to expose our team to a different atmosphere. I'm glad we won and look forward to meetings with UMES in the future."

Staley, a women's college basketball standout, Olympic gold medalist and current WNBA star wasn't the only representative from the professional basketball ranks in the arena. Former UMES Public Address Announcer and current announcer for the WNBA's Charlotte Sting and NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, Patrick Doughty, returned to provide his P.A. services for the night.

"It was great to be back to give back to the place that gave me my start and see the wonderful fans here at UMES, said Doughty. He and Temple Coach Dawn Staley had a reunion of sorts, as Doughty announced Staley when she played for the Sting.

Mark Patton tied a career-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Marshall to a 66-56 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec 1.

Joe Miles scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half while freshman Markel Humphrey set his career mark with 10 points in Marshall's victory.

Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md.) led Maryland-Eastern Shore with 17 points while Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) added 10 points in the loss.

The game was plagued by mistakes as both teams committed several turnovers and did not execute when they could hold onto the ball.

Marshall committed 20 turnovers in the contest and shot just 37 percent from the field. However, the Hawks could do no better, amassing 17 turnovers and hitting 36 percent from the floor.

The biggest advantage of the game came on offense where Marshall was able to come down with 22 offensive rebounds on the way to 50 total for the game.

Three Hawks had double-doubles on Dec. 3 as the UMES Men's Basketball team downed Morehead State, 65-59, to pick up their second win of the season. Tim Parham scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) finished with 11 points and 11 assists. Qavotstaraj Waddell (Norfolk, Va.) added 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as the Hawks avenged a 17 point loss to the Eagles last year.

Parham, a 6-9 senior, hit seven-of-eight from the field. Waddell, a 6-11 freshman, hit seven-of-10 from the field and also had four blocked shots. Ryan Leak (Jamaica, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring effort for the maroon and gray as he scored 11 points before leaving the game with an injury.

The Hawks led by four points, 31-to-27, at halftime, and led by as many as 12 points in the second half before holding off a late Eagle rally. MSU cut the lead to one point at 58-57 on a jumper by Tyke Cockerham with 1:42 remaining in the game, but UMES scored five straight points and out-scored the Eagles seven-to-two down the stretch, hitting its last four free throws.

UMES (2-5), hit 49 percent from the field (24-of-49), while cold-shooting Morehead State hit only 32.8 percent (20-of-61). The Hawks out-rebounded the Eagles, 41-to-32.
