TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Fighting and Lady Hawks track and field program will be well represented this weekend at the 2008 NCAA Track & Field East Regional. Eight student-athletes from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) will take part in the event, spanning nine different events. The meet, held on the campus of Florida State University on Friday and Saturday, May 30-31 at the Mike Long Track, will feature many of the regions best tracksters and also feature over 90 athletes from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

The top five finishers in each individual event and top three teams in the relays will automatically qualify for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor track & Field Championships to be held in Des Moines, Iowa June 11-14.

Leading the way is all-everything runner Tanisha Wisdom for the Lady Hawks. Wisdom, ranked fourth in the region and 14th in the nation with her time of 52.90 in the 400-meter dash, will also compete on the women's 4 x 400-meter relay team. The team, comprised of Celia Whyte, Merrecia James, Danai Lendor and Wisdom, ran a time of 3:43.50, qualifying earlier this season at the Morgan State University Legacy meet.

The other three members of that team will also compete individually. James, who met qualifying marks in three events other than the relay will concentrate on just one at the meet. She will run the 800-meter run where she ranks top 40 nationally with a time of 2:07.87. Whyte will also compete in the same event. She earned a birth by winning the MEAC Championship in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.08.

Lendor will run in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:00.40 at the MEAC Championships is top 50 nationally.

The final women competing for the Lady Hawks will be Saisha Woodward who won the MEAC Championship in the javelin with a throw of 38.20 meters.

On the men's side the Fighting Hawks will send three runners to the regional with super-sophomore Allodin Fothergill leading the way. Fothergill ranks seventh in the region and 33rd nationally in the 400-meter dash. He has the second fastest time in the MEAC this season with a 46.40 ran at the Legacy Track Meet. Fothergill also qualified in the 200-meter run but will concentrate on just the 400-meter.

Also competing will be two of the Hawks' distance stars. Peter Sang will run in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He qualified by setting a MEAC and school record at the conference championships, winning with a time of 9:20.07. Along side Sang will be Amon Kiprotich who will run in the 5000-meter. He won the MEAC Championship with his time of 14:53.30.
