MOUNT SAINT MARY'S SWEEPS UMES IN DOUBLEHEADER; 7-0 AND 5-1

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (0-5) were swept in a doubleheader today by Mount Saint Mary's (2-0). Ronald Quick (Clinton, Md./Coppin State) recorded his 100th career hit but it wasn't enough as The Mount took down the Fighting Hawks 7-0 and 5-1.

Jason Janeski (Salisbury, Md./Parkside H.S.) held his own for the first three innings. It wasn't until the top of the third when things started to unravel. Janeski (0-2) gave up two hits in the top of the fourth allowing one run to score. Then in the top of the fifth he gave up another two hits allowing another run to score. Kenny Richardson (Princess Anne, Md./Washington H.S.) stepped in for Janeski where he allowed three more runs to score and walked six batters.

Quick went 2-4 with two stolen bases along with Brad Powell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside H.S.), who also went 2-4 in game one. Joel Maher (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico H.S.), Eric Gaines (Oberlin, Ohio/ Eastern Michigan) and Justin Hoban (Selbyville, Del./Delaware Valley College) also recorded hits for the Hawks.

Mount St. Mary's was led by Eric Smith who went 2-5 with 2 RBI and one run scored. Josh Vittek and Stephan Fay both went 1-3 with 2 RBI with Vittek scoring one run. Dustin Pease (1-0) recorded the win for the Mount.

In game two, Mount St. Mary's managed to only score a run in the top of the second and the top of the fourth innings. However, that was enough to spark a fire under the Hawks especially Quick as he singled up the middle and stole second. He would later score on a groundout to second base by Mike DiCarlo (Seaford, Del./Seaford H.S.).

Dustin Longchamps (Lewiston, Maine/Central Maine CC) came in for Kevin Hillenburg (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City CC) in the top of the fifth. Longchamps (0-1) walked two and allowed one hit before Mike Roberts (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright H.S.) replaced him on the mound. Roberts had a tough time as The Mount scored three more runs on two hits in the top of the fifth.

Gaines went 2-3 with one stolen base while Bernie Stratchko (La Plata, Md./McDonough H.S.), Greg Cathell (Delmar Md./ Delmar H.S.) and Quick all went 1-2.

Joe Kotula went 2-3 with one double and a triple for Mount St. Mary's. Justin Davis (1-0) recorded his first win of the season.

UMES will next take on Buffalo in a three game series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday February 25 at noon.
