QUICK'S GAME-WINNING RBI-DOUBLE EARNS DOUBLE-HEADER SPLIT

Ronald Quick's RBI-Double won game two of the double-header

Feb. 20, 2005

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - On Sunday afternoon UMES split a double-header with Manhattan College. The double-header, which was to be played on Saturday, was pushed back due to low temperatures on Saturday. Manhattan won the first game 10-3, but in the second game, a Ronald Quick game-winning RBI double to right-center gave the Fighting Hawks their first victory of the 2005 season.

In the second game, the Hawks (1-7) again started strong as they retired Manhattan (2-1) in order and then Joel Maher and Quick led off the bottom half of the first with back-to-back singles. Maher and Quick each scored on groundouts, first by Craig Munch and followed by Justin Hoban.

The Jasper's looked to get back into the game in the third inning as the lead off hitter reached via a four-pitch walk, but a line drive snagged by Brandon McCabe led to an easy double-play for the Fighting Hawks.

In the fourth, Manhattan final recorded its first hit and had runners on second and third with two outs, when another line-drive was snagged, this time by Bernie Stratchko.

In the top of the sixth, Manhattan knocked starting pitcher Ken Richardson out of the game as they strung together a double, a walk, a single, and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. Richardson left after pitching five and two-third innings, giving up two runs on only four hits. Pete Mayta relieved Richardson with a runner on a third and closed the inning without surrendering the lead.

Mayta (1-0) set down the side in order in the seventh, which set up the dramatic win for UMES. Eric Gaines led off the inning reaching base after he was hit by a pitch, and then was sacrificed over to second by Maher.

With one out Quick drove a pitch over the shoulder of the centerfielder as the ball one-hopped the wall for the game-winning double. Quick finished the game 3-5 with a run and an RBI.

In the first game with the temperatures a bit warmer, the Fighting Hawks bats began to heat up early in the first game, as McCabe gave starting pitcher Jason Janeski (0-1) a three-run lead after one inning as he belted his second homerun of the season.

However, the Jaspers answered quickly with eight runs in the top of the second as UMES gave Manhattan all the opportunities in the world allowing the first hitter to reach base on an error and missed an opportunity at second to throw him out.

Later in the inning the Jasper's stole two bases, but catcher Morgan Schirmer had both of them gunned down, but the middle-infield could not control the throw and apply the tag for the outs.

With the score 8-3 in favor of Manhattan, Janeski settled in and retired eight straight before Gary Diaz and Matt Rizzotti connected on back-to-back two-out solo homeruns in the sixth.

Manhattan starting pitcher, Steve Bronder (1-0) pitched five innings allowing only the three-run homerun to McCabe, while striking out three. Kyle Wirtz closed out the last two innings striking out three. Together they retired the final 17 Fighting Hawk hitters to come to the plate.

The Fighting Hawks will look to build upon the momentum from this walk-off win as they play host to Norfolk State University on Wednesday, February 23rd. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at Hawk Stadium.
