NORFOLK,Va. - The 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Tournament could have turned out better for the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Honestly, the whole season could have turned out better, but with such a young team, Head Coach Will Gardner knew it was a year for his freshmen and transfers to get used to DI baseball. After all, the Hawks only had two seniors. Both of those have been four year letter-winners for the program and contributed greatly. One however, went out with a bang, as Ken Richardson earned an All-Tournament selection at the MEAC Championship, a fitting way to cap a career.

In two games at the tournament Richardson picked up a pair of hits and a walk in serving as the team's designated hitter. Both were singles, one to right field and one through the left side, both against eventual tournament champion Bethune-Cookman.

Richardson was an important part of the 2008 squad, pitching, fielding and hitting. He was a regular in the weekend rotation until an injury to his throwing arm occurred. Despite that injury hew still swung the bat for UMES as the team's DH. He saw action in 43of the tam's 56 games and collected 13 hits at the plate and struck out 34 in over 53 inning of work on the mound.

The loss to Norfolk State ended the careers of Richardson and fellow senior Dan Sterling. Both had storybook endings to their careers at home as the Hawks topped La Salle with Sterling getting the win on the mound and Richardson a hit in his final at bat.

The program is grateful for both of their contributions and wishes them well in their future endeavors.

Joining Richardson on the All-Tournament Team was: Jeremy Jones, Nick Rogers, Marquise Frink and Joe McIntyre all of North Carolina A&T, Moriba george, Jerrod Farley, Chris Joyce and Brad Stephenson all of Norfolk State, Ryan Mailen from Delaware State, Darryl Evans of Florida A&M and Osvaldo Torres, Jose Lozada and Coach Mervyl Melendez all of Bethune-Cookman. Lozada was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the tournament and Melendez the Most Outstanding Coach.
