In a year of much athletic success, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Department of Athletics has much to be proud of in terms of academic success. In two recent separate events, many Hawks were honored for their academic successes in the classroom. UMES recently hosted their annual Scholar's Luncheon where the department recognized those athletes who have had a lot of success academically while the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) recently released its All-Academic Team, featuring 40 student-athletes from UMES.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks season came to a close with a 70-61 loss to Florida A&M University (FAMU) Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament at the RBC Center.

UMES OPENS MEAC TOURNAMENT AGAINST FLORIDA A&M ON WEDNESDAY

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks will face the Florida A&M Rattlers Wednesday in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament at the RBC Center.

UMES (4-27, 2-14 MEAC) dropped their sixth straight to end the regular season with a 67-52 decision against Delaware State University on Thursday. Marc Davis, an All-MEAC Rookie Team Selection, led the Hawks with 13 points. BJ Nimocks and Ed Tyson, an All-MEAC Second Team Member, finished with 11 points apiece. Nimocks also grabbed six rebounds before leaving midway through the second half with a broken nose. Omar Akram added eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds off the bench.

FAMU (14-16, 9-7 MEAC), the defending MEAC Tournament Champions, enters the matchup on a five game winning streak after defeating Bethune-Cookman on Thursday, 69-50. The Rattlers offensive attack is led by Leslie Robinson who is averaging 15 points per game on the season, while Lamar Twitty is adding 12.8 points per game. Akini Akini is tops on the team with 6.2 rebounds per game.

The Rattlers swept the season series against UMES with the first win coming back on January 26, 72-62. They picked up another victory over the Hawks on February 23, 62-60. Coincidentally, both contests were on homecoming night for each team.

FAMU was led by Robinson with 16.5 points per game. Larry Jackson, an All-MEAC Rookie Team Selection, added 16 points per game, while Twitty chipped in with 11 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Tyson and Davis led UMES in scoring for both contests with 22 and 14.5 points per game. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The winners will face third-seeded Norfolk State on Thursday at 6 p.m.

HAWKS CLEAN-UP AT MEAC AWARDS BANQUET, CASEY MORTON NAMED ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) earned several awards at the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tip-off Banquet. The Lady and Fighting Hawks were well represented as five different players took six separate honors, four of which were earned by the women's basketball team. The top Hawk honors went to Lady Hawks Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md./Mardela H.S.) who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year and April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) who was a first team selection.

UMES GAME TIMES AND SEEDINGS ANNOUNCED FOR MEAC TOURNAMENT

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men and women's basketball teams have wrapped up their regular season schedules and now prepare for the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament starting on March 11, 2008 in Raleigh, N.C. After both teams' final games on Thursday night in Dover, Del against Delaware State University, and the rest of the conference finishing up as well, the seeding has been determined for the tournament.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks closed out their regular season with a 67-52 loss to Delaware State University (DSU) Thursday night in Memorial Hall. With the loss UMES will play as the 11th seed in the conference tournament.

UMES CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON ON THE ROAD AGAINST DELAWARE STATE TONIGHT

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Basketball teams conclude their regular seasons tonight against Delaware State University (DSU) in Memorial Hall.

The Lady Hawks (17-11, 10-5 MEAC) enter tonight's finale after suffering a 75-49 loss to Coppin State on Senior Day. UMES failed to put a single player in double figures for the first time this season as Casey Morton and Tiffany Reid finished with nine points each. April McBride added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while seniors Kristi Veltkamp and Brittany Adkins had seven and four points, respectively.With a win UMES would finish third in the MEAC regular season standings and a third seed in the conference tournament.

DSU (16-13, 11-4 MEAC) enters their final game riding a three game winning streak after defeating Morgan State on Saturday, 66-49. The Hornets lost earlier this season to UMES, 61-55. They are led by Raquel Collier and Katreem Palmer with 12.6 and 10.9 points per game, respectively. The two were held to only six points combined in the first meeting. Instead, DSU was led by Keyhana Wakefield with 14 points off the bench.

Morton led the Lady Hawks with a game-high 17 points in the first win over DSU, while McBride added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Hawks (4-26, 2-13 MEAC) have dropped five straight games, including an 85-66 loss to Coppin State on Senior Day. Ed Tyson finished with a team-high 25 points, while senior B.J Nimocks had 12 points and seven boards in his home finale. Omar Akram recorded his first collegiate double-double as he set career-highs with 10 points and 10 boards. Brandon Moore concluded his college career with four rebounds in limited action, while Jahmal Bivins did not play in his farewell.

DSU (12-15, 9-6 MEAC) comes in having dropped their last two games, following a 39-36 setback to Morgan State on Saturday. The Hornets defeated UMES earlier this season, 59-47. They are led by Roy Bright with 19.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Bright did not play in the first meeting due to an injury, however; Donald Johnson stepped up in his absence as he recorded a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Tyson, the MEAC's leading scorer, finished with 14 points in the first loss to DSU. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks Senior Day was spoiled by Coppin State University (CSU) as they fell 85-66 on Saturday night in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES bid farewell to one true senior, BJ Nimocks (Detroit, Mich./Cloud County C.C.), and two others who are graduating early, Brandon Moore (Baltimore, Md./Southern H.S.) and Jahmal Bivins (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown H.S.).

UMES BIDS FAREWELL TO SENIORS AGAINST COPPIN STATE

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Basketball conclude their regular home seasons as they host Coppin State University (CSU) on Senior Day in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The Lady Hawks (17-10, 10-4 MEAC) enter tonight's game having won three consecutive games, including a 64-41 decision over Bethune-Cookman on Monday. With the victory UMES matched a school record for wins in a season. Four players finished in double digit scoring as April McBride led all scorers with 14 points. Tiffany Reid and Casey Morton finished with 12 points apiece, while Parker added 10 points.With the win UMES remained in a three-way tie with Morgan State and Delaware State for third place in the MEAC.

CSU (17-11, 11-3 MEAC) enters the game as winners of their last six after defeating Howard 101-57 on Monday. The Eagles have not lost since UMES defeated them at home 69-62 on February 4. They are led by Shalamar Oakley and Rashida Suber with 17.9 and 17.4 points per game respectively. The two combined for 42 points in the first meeting.

McBride and Morton led the Lady Hawks with 18 points each in the first win. McBride also recorded a game-high 16 rebounds. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Ed Tyson led UMES with a team-high 18 points, while Gary Lee added 14 points to go along with career-highs of nine rebounds and three steals. Ishmawiyl McFadden finished with 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds.

CSU (11-19, 6-8 MEAC) comes in on a seven game winning streak, including a 68-45 win over Howard on Monday. The Eagles started their streak with a 59-54 win over UMES. Tywain McKee leads the offensive attack with 15.3 points per game. McKee recorded 14 points in the first meeting between the teams.

Tyson led all scorers with 30 points in the first loss to CSU. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Basketball teams will host Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) tonight in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The Lady Hawks (16-10, 9-4 MEAC) enter tonight's game having won two consecutive contests, including a 74-54 decision over Florida A&M on Saturday. April McBride finished with her 10th double-double of the season with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Chena Parker added the first of her career, finishing with 18 points and a personal best 13 rebounds.With the win UMES remained in a three-way tie with Morgan State and Delaware State for third place in the MEAC.

B-CU (4-21, 1-12 MEAC) enters the game on a four game skid after dropping their last contest to Delaware State on Monday, 55-37. The Wildcats are led by Natasha Ferguson with 10.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while Demetria Frank is adding 10.2 points per game. Frank and Ferguson finished with 14 and seven points in the first meeting respectively.

UMES won the first game against B-CU on the road, 77-51. Jelila Abdul-Bassit finished with a career-high 14 points in the game. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Marc Davis added 13 points, including 11 in the second period, on nine-of-11 free-throw shooting. Omar Akram provided a spark off the bench as he set career-highs with seven points and six rebounds in 15 minutes of action that all came in the second half.

B-CU (9-16, 5-6 MEAC) comes in on a three game skid after losing to Delaware State on Saturday, 49-44. The Wildcats offensive attack is led by John Holmes, a local product, with 13 points and six rebounds per game. Holmes posted a double-double of 13 points and 18 boards in the first meeting this season.

UMES dropped the first game this season to B-CU on the road, 63-54. Tyson led all scorers with 18 points. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:05 p.m. on ESPNU.
