May 8, 2003 PRINCESS ANNE, MD-- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's and women's tennis teams have a lot to hang their hat on from the 2002-2003 season. The women's team won their first match in several seasons with a win over the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College in the spring round up. They also defeated that same squad 4-2 at the MEAC Championships and solidified a tenth place finish, one better than last season. The men's team went into the Championships without a win, but knocked off Bethune-Cookman College and won single games against Morgan State to finish eighth, three spots up from their 11th place seed. "I am pleased with the way we improved on both the men's and women's side this season," said Head Coach Doug Wright. UMES Tennis is moving in the right directions and we will continue to get better," he added. Look for the Fighting and Lady Hawks to take the court next September when the fall season begins.
