FAIRFAX, Va. - She may have already graduated, but the standout student-athlete that is Brittany Adkins is still being recognized for her hard work. Adkins was named to the 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars First Team for Women's Basketball. She is one of 14 first team selections and one of 54 overall selections for women's basketball from the national list that includes schools from all divisions and affiliations. Adkins is the only athlete from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to receive the award this year. "Brittany Adkins is one of the most intelligent, strong-willed, and determined young people I've ever had the opportunity to know," said her former coach Fred Batchelor. "She is committed to success by working diligently to achieve her goals. She is a special gift to all who know her." The article, naming Adkins to the team appears in the May 29 issue of Diverse Issues In Higher Education and honors "undergraduate student athletes of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination." The award is inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr. and his commitment to education and his love for the game of tennis. Every college and university in the country can nominate students who not only excel athletically but exhibit academic excellence and community activism. To be included students have to maintain a GPA of at least a 3.2 and be active parts of their campus and community. Joining Adkins on the first team were players from Hampton, Texas State, Illinois State, George Washington and Oklahoma State among others. Adkins is one of more than 325 women athletes selected nationally representing 17 sports. They were also many male athletes representing 15 sports. |
